What is the biggest challenge facing Sartell, and what steps would you take to solve it?
Tom Beutel - Budgeting for a reduced income due to building slowdown, economic trends and less sales tax income and yet maintaining city services and improvements.
Steve Hennes - Increased traffic due to continued rapid growth is a major challenge. Traffic in the area of Perkins and Abbot Northwestern is a growing concern. We will need to work with several jurisdictions to solve this issue. Heritage Drive needs to be rebuilt.
Joe Perske - The biggest challenge I see today is maintaining a quality community and future planning under tough economic times. Sartell is the lowest-taxed city in our metro area and yet is a very desirable place to live. We can continue to do just that.
What are your top three spending priorities?
Tom Beutel - 1. Streets and roadways 2. New developement 3. Upkeep and improvement of recreational parks and facilities.
Steve Hennes - 1. Expansion of the Sartell/LeSauk Fire Station to handle existing equipment. 2. Reconstruction of Heritage Drive. 3. Improvements to our city park system using park dedication fees, local option sales tax revenues and private sponsorships.
Joe Perske - Maintain public safety with quality fire protection and law enforcement, yet hire only employees who are necessary for the city. are and maintain our existing roads to maximize the life of our investments. Work cooperatively with other agencies.
What should Sartell do to meet the varying needs of its youth and senior populations?
Tom Beutel - Sartell has numerous needs in regards to the youth and Senior citizens ,With the funding reduced due to the Golf Course purchase ,we are going to have to look at volunteerism and fund raising campaigns to meet these needs.
Steve Hennes - We need to plan recreational and athletic opportunities for our youth and for people of all ages. Continue development of our city's trail system for youth and for people of all ages. Continue to support the Sartell Senior Connection.
Joe Perske - Cooperation with the Sartell School District and other community groups has provided all ages to have many opportunities in city, so let's continue that model. The half cent sales tax should be used wisely to provide future community amenities.
How would you improve Sartell's roadways and trail systems to keep traffic flowing safely and efficiently?
Tom Beutel - We now have the opportunity to run an east-west connector between Pine Cone Road and 19th Avenue. There is in the works plans to run Roberts Road from County Road 1 thru Pine Cone Market Place. We need to get Pine Cone Road TO RUN SOUTH through St. Cloud.
Steve Hennes - Intersections at County Road 1, LeSauk Drive, Heritage Drive near McDonald's need to be improved. Rebuilding Heritage Drive. Working in conjunction with other cities and counties, we have the opportunity to connect our trail system with other communities.
Joe Perske - First, we need to maintain our present roads. Planning needs to be done with the big picture and future in mind. Construction needs to be done right in the first place to ensure longevity of investment and to accommodate future growth.
